Dr. Christine Calvert

Veterinary Doctor

Dr. Calvert is a native of the Pasadena area and is a graduate of Chesapeake Senior High School. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's in Biochemistry followed by a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, she practiced veterinary medicine in Anne Arundel County for several years before opening Calvert Veterinary Center in Pasadena, MD in 2004.

Dr. Calvert enjoys all areas of veterinary medicine including dermatology, feline medicine, greyhounds, rabbits and pocket pets. She also has a passion for laser surgery and has over 15 years experience with this special tool.  Her family of pets includes Bolt, a very active Basenji, a guinea pig, named Raven, and Bomber the ball python. Dr. Calvert is a member of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the American Institute of Medical Laser Applications, American Veterinary Medical Association, Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, and the Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association. She attends at least one major continuing education meeting each year to keep up to date on the latest medical information.

Dr. Karen Van Kirk

Veterinary Doctor

Dr. Van Kirk is also a graduate of Virginia Tech and has practiced companion animal medicine for more than 30 years. She cared for patients at Glen Burnie Animal Hospital prior to joining our practice in 2004. Her professional interests include internal medicine, including feline medicine.

Dr. Van Kirk is very compassionate and treats each patient as if it were her own pet. She also belongs to the Greater Baltimore Veterinary Medical Association and Maryland Veterinary Medical Association. She is active in her church and has taught middle school level Sunday school class at Community United Methodist Church for 17 years.

During that time, she also coordinated a number of youth community service projects as outreach to the Pasadena community. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and gardening.

Dr. Lacy Gilmer

Veterinary Doctor

Dr. Gilmer joined the Calvert Veterinary Center team in June 2013. She grew up in Frederick, Maryland, where she had been working in veterinary hospitals since she was 14. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland College Park (go terps!) in the honors college and

earned a bachelor’s of science in physiology and neurobiology with a minor in Spanish language in 2009. She then earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Florida, where she focused on small animal medicine and took electives in small mammal, reptile and avian medicine and surgery. While at school, Dr. Gilmer traveled to Honduras,

Thailand and Vietnam to work with endangered animals and interact with the veterinarians working in conservation medicine. Her other professional interests include dermatology, oncology, animal behavior, soft tissue surgery, and ultrasonography. Dr. Gilmer is also a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians,

Maryland Medical Veterinary Association, American Veterinary Medical Association and Anne Arundel County Veterinary Medical Association. She elected to move back to Maryland to settle down and be close to her family. She joined Calvert to be at the forefront of gold standard veterinary care

In her free time, Dr. Gilmer enjoys snuggling with her dog, Solo, and ball python, Aayla. She enjoys playing field hockey and is a devoted sports fan, following the Terrapins, Ravens and Capitals. She loves to travel the world to scuba dive. She also enjoys hiking, skiing, baking and curling up with a good book on the couch. She is an avid Star Wars fan.

Dr. Catherine DeJesus

Veterinary Doctor

Dr. Catherine DeJesus joined Calvert Veterinary Center in January 2016. She grew up in the Bronx, New York where she has worked with animals since she was 14 years old in both academic, veterinary, and zoo settings. Dr. DeJesus completed her undergraduate studies at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in  

Environmental Science while taking courses required for veterinary school. After graduation, she worked closely with animals in an internship at the National Institutes of Health Hematology Department. There she assisted in research with biological response modifying drugs used to help prevent and alleviate the side effects chemotherapy has on certain blood cells. After finishing her internship, Dr. DeJesus pursued her goal of becoming a veterinarian and attended the 

University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine.   

Dr. DeJesus completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates and has worked part time at several veterinary hospitals. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Her other professional interests include dermatology, internal medicine, and oncology.

Dr. DeJesus currently resides in Annapolis, Maryland with her husband, Nick, and Australian Shepherd, Luke! In their free time they enjoy traveling to see family and friends, binge watching NETFLIX, cooking, and doing work around the house. Dr. DeJesus joined Calvert Veterinary Center because of its gold standard veterinary care and focus on clients and continuing education. 

Dr. Alexis Denysyk

Veterinary Doctor

Dr. Denysyk received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from James Madison University, She then earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded oncology student of the year upon graduation.

Additionally, during her time in veterinary school she was granted a summer fellowship research opportunity at Harvard Medical School for research in the effect of AIDS and SIV (Simon infective virus) on the nervous system.  

After veterinary school, she successfully completed a 1-year rotating small animal internship followed by a 3-year residency in Small Animal Medical Oncology at University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine where she focused on compassionate patient care, research techniques, the use of chemotherapy agents when indicated, and the value of teaching skills.

~~When Dr. Denysyk is not working she enjoys cooking and spending as much time outdoors as possible. She lives with her husband and their dog Etienne (aka “Mongoose” – he really does get into everything).

Sally Mullen

Practice Manager

Sally joined us in July of 2005 and works as our practice manager, as well as assisting with surgery and dentistry. She is a graduate of Frostburg State University's Business Administration program. She worked with Dr. Calvert at Crofton Veterinary Center for several years before joining our staff.

She lives in Halethorpe with her two cats Sinatra and Sugar Paws, and her Labrador, Nox. When not caring for the pets at work she enjoys cooking, gardening, and enjoying the outdoors with Nox.

Donna

Veterinary Assistant and Puppy Class Instructor

Donna initially joined our practice in 2006 and left in 2009 to live in Oregon so she could be with her youngest daughter Alexandra, then returned in September of 2011.  She has a strong love for animals, people and education, and being a Veterinary Assistant reaches all facets. Through her journey, she has received two Certificates of Completion from the Karen Pryor

Academy for Animal Training & Behavior, which she has put to good use as the instructor of the Puppy Socialization Class we now offer here.  She is also a graduate of the University of Baltimore, where she received a B.S. in Corporate Communications.

In Donna's spare time, you can find her spending time with friends and family, and listening to live music in Historic Ellicott City.  Donna has two daughters and a grandson, and between the four of them they are the proud owners of four dogs, Natty and Indie who are lab mixes, Piper a french bulldog, Nala a pit bull, and three cats, Madison, Gonzo and Anakin.  

Jennifer

Veterinary Assistant

Jennifer joined us in July of 2004 and works with us both as a Veterinary Assistant and Receptionist.  She came to us from Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital with over 4 years of veterinary receptionist and assistant experience.  She resides in Arnold with her husband and 3 boys, Nathan who is 11, David who is 8, and Owen who is 4.

She obtained an associate degree in General Studies and is currently working on her bachelor's degree in Psychology.  Jennifer loves working with animals in any capacity and is especially fond of our feline patients.  She's also an avid runner and participates in many area races throughout the year.

She has a very handsome 15 year old cat named Sylvester and a mixed breed dog named Charlie.  He's 12 years old and can still keep up with her three young boys!

Groomer

Jennifer "Jaycee" Stevens joined us as a full time groomer in July of 2014.  She graduated from Severna Park High School in 1992 and her love of animals led her to start working in the pet industry. She began her career working in various boarding kennels and transitioned to working in a veterinary hospital. During this time she advanced through the ranks, starting as a kennel technician,

veterinary receptionist, then being promoted to a supervisor. Jen always had an interest in grooming would work as a grooming assistant at times. After becoming a grooming assistant for several years, she found the passion to become a dog groomer and attended the Maryland School of Dog Grooming in Baltimore. She ultimately obtained her grooming diploma throughout the Penn Foster program and has thousands of hours as an apprentice to a

master groomer and has been grooming on her own for the last nine years.

When not working she enjoys spending family time with her son, and her boyfriend, Duke.  They enjoy traveling on the weekends to dog shows and competitions with their Dutch Shepherd, Phantom, a retired dock diving dog, with his longest jump being 24 feet 11 inches. She also has a sweet laborador retriever named Magic who can normally be found hanging out in our reception area while Jennifer is grooming.  She also has 2 cats, Spook and Gypsy.

Amanda

Receptionist and Veterinary Assistant

Amanda joined us in March of 2013.  She has been working as a receptionist and vet assistant since 2001. Her biggest passion in the veterinary industry is animal nutrition, especially prescription diets.  She's attended many lectures and continuing education seminars hosted by Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionists on theraputic diets and

enjoys educating our clients on this subject. She lives in Glen Burnie with her husband, Seth, and new baby girl, Mackenzie. Her dog, Toby, is a senior dachshund, but she also has three rescue orange and white tabby cats, Eddie, Stinker, and Jack.

A very important part of her life and passion of hers is volunteering at The National Aquarium (Baltimore venue), where she has been participating in since 2002.  She can be found at the Aquarium every other week scuba diving, feeding the fish and animals, and entertaining the public. 

Shannon

Treatment Assistant

Shannon joined our team in December of 2014. She has lived in the Pasadena area her entire life.  She has always been interested in animal care and is one of our treatment assistants. She is currently a senior at Chesapeake High School.

When not at school or work, Shannon enjoys playing field hockey and spending time with friends and family. She lives with her mother and father who also grew up in the Pasadena area, and her older sister.

She has a yorkie-poo named Holly whose favorite pastime is chasing squirrels and showing off her spunky personality.  In the future, Shannon hopes to have a career in childcare or early education since she enjoys caring for children.

Erika

Treatment Assistant

Erika joined us in August of 2015. She works as a treatment technician and has a special love for Dachshunds. She recently graduated high school and will be attending Anne Arundel Community College.

Rachel

Veterinary Assistant

Rachel joined us in November of 2015. She enjoys whipping up tasty treats for our 4-legged friends and brightening everyone's day with her smile. Rachel is enrolled in a Veterinary Technician school in order to expand her knowledge and expertise in the field of veterinary medicine.

Katie

Receptionist

Katie joined us in November of 2015. She is a receptionist and has lived in Pasadena since the age of 10. Katie loves greeting all patients and getting lots of puppy kisses. She is also quite fond of our exotic animals.

Lexi

Receptionist

Lexi rejoined us in March of 2016 as a receptionist. Lexi previously worked at Calvert Vet in 2008, but took a hiatus to raise her children and grow her family. We are very pleased to have her back as part of our Calvert Vet family.

Tamia

Receptionist

Tamia joined us in March of 2016 as one of our receptionists. She grew up on a farm, so she developed a love of animals early on. Tamia previously worked as a child care provider, and currently volunteers with youth programs in the community. 

Lauren

Veterinary Assistant

Lauren joined us in January of 2016. She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a double degree in Biology and Anthropology. Lauren has a special love of our exotic patients, and owns two snakes and a bearded dragon.

Ashleigh

Treatment Assistant

Ashleigh joined us in October of 2015. She recently graduated from Chesapeake High School and loves to go off-roading with her Jeep club. Ashleigh has a cat and four dogs at home, but still can't get enough love from all of our furry patients.

Trinity

Treatment Assistant

Trinity joined our team February of 2016 as a Treatment Assistant. Trinity grew up in Glenn Burnie and has always had a love of animals. She loves learning about and assisting with all of our patients, especially the exotics and cats. She has the world's sweetest kitty named Karma.

Sydney

Treatment Assistant

Sydney joined us mid 2016 as a Treatment Assistant. She is a life-long Pasadena resident who goes to Chesapeake High School. She has a special love for Jeeps and bulldogs, and has 4 of her own dogs at home. Sydney is an eager learner and a great addition to our team. 

Sarah

Receptionist and Veterinary Assistant

Sarah joined the Calvert Vet team in summer of 2016 and does just about everything! She is a Receptionist, Veterinary Assistant, and Treatment Assistant, so she knows all the workings of the hospital. Sarah has a Bachelor's degree from Elon University and has recently moved to the Baltimore area. She is especially enjoying learning about the exotics, but loves all animals we see here. 

Zoe

Receptionist

Zoe is one of our Receptionists who joined us in 2016. Zoe is a Pasadena resident with a particular love of our feline friends. She has her own handsome orange kitty at home named Kyo, and is possibly looking to add a new cat to her family. 

Jess

Veterinary Assistant

Jess is a wonderful addition to the Calvert Vet family as one of our Veterinary Assistants. Jess has worked at a few vet practices and has a lot of experience under her belt. She owns two of the sweetest cats, Link and Luna, but loves our canine, feathered, and scaled friends as well. 

Whitney

Veterinary Assistant and Receptionist

Whitney is a Maryland native who rejoined our team in 2017 after a brief move to the Eastern Shore. Whitney is a Veterinary Assistant and Receptionist who is very excited to be back working with all of our clients and patients. She is particularly fond of our feline friends, and is enojying learning more about the exotics we see at Calvert Vet. Whitney enjoys photography, hiking, camping, and sleeping in her free time.
