Dental Cleaning and Prophylaxis

Pets have teeth too!

Dental disease is one of the most common problems that we see in pets age 3 and older.  Bacteria accumulate in the mouth and lead to plaque and tartar formation.  If not removed, this bacteria causes infections under the gum line, also known as gingivitis and can progress to periodontal disease.  In this more advanced stage of  dental disease the bone that holds the tooth in place becomes infected and will lead to loose and painful teeth.

Dental Prophylaxis

Dental Prophylaxis is recommended once every 1-2 years in most dogs to prevent this accumulation of tartar and prevent extractions that are necessary with more advanced disease.  Home dental care will help keep your pet's teeth looking good after they are cleaned, but these home care products are not designed to remove plaque and tartar once it has accumulated.

Dental X-rays

Dental x-rays allow us to precisely evaluate the tooth roots and look for any disease under the gum line as pets often do not show any symptoms when they are having dental problems.  This is done at the time of a dental prophylaxis so that we can address any areas of concern during the same procedure.

Dental disease is more than just "doggy breath" and dirty teeth.  The bacteria that cause the plaque and tartar can travel in your pet's blood stream and cause infections in major organs such as the liver, kidneys and heart.  Early detection and treatment of dental problems is key to preventing diseased teeth and multiple tooth extractions.

Anesthesia is necessary to complete a comprehensive cleaning and dental x-rays.  Our expert staff and doctors take many precautions to ensure your pet is safe during this procedure.  Call our office today to discuss your pet's oral health and determine if a dental cleaning is needed for your pet.
